In a rare move, judge to inspect 2010 Kurla rape-murder scene
The trial in the case has almost come to a close with the prosecution and defence having examined witnesses.
In 2010, a nine-year-old girl was found raped and killed. A cable operator’s employee, Javed Shaikh, was arrested. Charged with murder, kidnap and rape, Shaikh pleaded ‘not guilty’.
For this, defence advocate Amin Solkar filed an application on Monday. “It is…in the interest of justice to see the places and spot where the girl was kidnapped so as to appreciate the evidence of the witnesses,” Solkar told TOI.
He said that when topography of a crime scene is brought on record, such an inspection is not commonplace. “But this especially is a sensitive case. So, such an application was necessary.”
Special prosecutor Pradeep Gharat did not object to the application. “The judge will be accompanied by defence, police officers and me,” said Gharat.
In 2001, then sessions court judge M L Tahaliyani, who was hearing music moghul Gulshan Kumar’s murder case, had visited the crime scene.
