Odisha crime branch to probe Balangir rape, murder case
BHUBANESWAR: The state government on Wednesday entrusted the Crime Branch (CB) to probe alleged rape and murder of a minor girl at Sargipali village in Balangir two months ago.
Balangir police was earlier accused of hushing up the case. Rallies and demonstrations were held in Khaprakhol block in protest against the alleged police inaction.
Though two persons, Jagnya Saraf and Supal Meher, were arrested, locals suspected police of protecting some influential persons involved in the heinous crime.
“The goons targeted her since her parents had been spearheading an anti-liquor movement in the village. She was gang-raped and burnt alive,” said campigner Rabi Das, who recently held a press conference in Bhubaneswar and demanded CBI probe into her death.
ADG (CB) BK Sharma said a team of investigating officers will reach Sargipali on Thursday and start the probe.
