Fear-stricken villagers beat up Army jawan
AHMEDABAD: The rumour-mongering for the past few days in central and north Gujarat of ‘gangs targeting women for rape’ to ‘fierce robbers’ and ‘incidents of brutality on people sleeping outside their huts’, to ‘terrorist attacks’ has yet another case of an innocent getting beaten up by a crowd during night vigil.
This time it was an army jawan, Jitendrasinh Jat, 35, who had alighted from an autorickshaw in the wee hours of Wednesday at Palej village.
Jat was stationed at the Chiloda army station in Gandhinagar.
The jawan was wearing shorts, which incidentally fit the description of the robber that the villagers feared.
He was first stoned and then beaten with sticks. A complaint was lodged at the Sector 21 police station.
In another incident, a sub-inspector of the Naroda surveillance squad, K H Jadeja, lodged a complaint after he received a message in a WhatsApp group “Jai Maa” which carried a fake message from the Gujarat government. The message said that there was a terrorist strike in Odhav, Nikol and Naroda areas and that the attackers were on a killing spree. This had caused a lot of panic in the area.
On Tuesday, Virendrasinh Yadav, superintendent of police, Gandhinagar, convened a meeting of police officials and instructed them to keep a check on the rumours.
