Cop booked for demanding bribe
JALANDHAR: An assistant sub inspector (ASI), in-charge of Focal Point police post, has been booked under Prevention of Corruption Act, assault and wrongful confinement of four youths.
The youths alleged that the accused cop —identified as Gopal Singh —asked for Rs 28,000 after releasing the fifth youth after accepting Rs 4,000. They also alleged that he tortured them in custody.
The complainant, Honey, alleged they were taken to the police post for questioning in a snatching case. He alleged that they were tortured there and was released after paying Rs 4,000, while Singh demanded Rs 28,000 from the families of the remaining four.
Commissioner of police Yurinder Singh Hayer was approached by BJP leaders Krishan Lal Sharma and Ashok Sareen to look into this matter. After initial enquiry, police registered a case under section 323, 342 of IPC and 7/13 of Prevention of Corruption Act on the basis of statement recorded by Honey at Police Station Division No. 8.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajinder Singh said that the accused cop had also been placed under suspension and these charges would be probed.
