Panchayat forces girl to marry rapist
KANPUR: A village panchayat in Mainpuri has forced a rape victim to marry her rapist. The marriage ceremony was solemnised in Agra on Friday. The police, however, denied any information about the development and said that legal process would be followed in the case.
According to reports, Gaurav Yadav of Manona village had abducted a BSc first year student on June 21 and raped her at a secluded place. The victim’s father had lodged a named FIR against the accused with the Barnahal police station. The accused was on the run since then.
Meanwhile, the girl, unable to bear the trauma, tried to commit suicide the same night. However, she was saved and rushed to a hospital in Agra, where doctors saved her.
Later, a village panchayat was called by the accused where elders forced girl’s family to accept the accused as his son-in-law. The family gave in to panchayat diktat after being threatened of social boycott.
“Village elders admitted that Gaurav had committed the crime but felt that police action would not only ruin his life but also bring a bad name to the village. Besides, the victim would be dogged by social stigma through out her life,” her brother said.
Karhal circle officer Ramanand Kushwaha said, “We have no information about marriage.” He further said, “We will send a team to hospital in Agra to record the statement of the girl, her parents, siblings and relatives. Any further action will be initiated thereafter.”
