Girl rescued from borewell after 32 hours in Rajasthan

JAIPUR: A hearing and speech impaired girl was rescued alive on Sunday from a borewell on her family’s farm in Rajasthan’s Sikar district.

Sunita Yadav was rescued nearly 32 hours after she fell into the borewell.

Teams of the Army, district administration and police worked relentlessly to save the girl stuck at 30 feet below in a narrow pipe. Officials said that she fought for her survival bravely as she kept making noises and remained conscious at least till late Saturday.

The girl was rushed to a hospital in Jaipur where doctors said that she was doing well.

“The credit goes to the girl since the sheer shock and fear of being stuck in a narrow, dark pipe could have proved fatal,” said a police officer who was part of the rescue team.

Her father Rudaram had got the borewell dug up at his farm a few days ago and covered it with a boulder after ground water was not found.

Five-year-old Sunita fell into the borewell at around 8 am on Saturday. She was playing with her younger sister. When she got tired, she set on the boulder which broke. While a part of it got displaced and another one on which she was sitting sunk into the borewell. The stone got stuck at 30 feet because the borewell pipe was an inch narrower from that distance.

Rescue operation began around 9 am on Saturday. The rescue teams roped in by the district administration started digging a hole parallel to the pipe but when they didn’t make much progress, the Army was called in.

“Oxygen was supplied and biscuits were lowered into the pipe. Her hands were stuck, but the girl ate one of the biscuits and drank some water directly from mouth. As she was constantly making noises, we didn’t lose hope,” a senior district administration officer said.

The rescue teams dug 32 feet into the ground by Saturday night, but the rescue operation hit a wall when digging was hampered after heavy stones that could not be crushed.
