Madras high court judge favours NJAC

NEW DELHI: A Madras high court judge, who had threatened the chief justice of the court with contempt of conduct and whose conduct was severely criticized by the Supreme Court, has questioned the collegium system for appointment of judges saying it functions in an “autocratic” manner.

In a letter written to the President, the Prime Minister and the Chief Justice of India, Justice CS Karnan favoured scrapping of the collegium system by bringing National Judicial Appointment Commission.

“The present Union government has rightly amended the bill which resulted in the formation of the NJAC in order to maintain the independency on democratic lines,” he said.
