90-yr-old man, daughter-in-law killed in Delhi
NEW DELHI: A 90-year-old man and his 64-year-old daughter-in-law were found murdered in their house in central Delhi’s east Patel Nagar on Sunday evening. The man was a retired senior CPWD engineer. They were found lying in the living room with multiple stab injuries and the door was locked from inside.
Preliminary investigations have ruled out robbery as a motive as the house was not ransacked and jewellery on the woman’s body was left untouched. Police have also recovered a pair of bloodstained scissors used in the murder.
The man, Sewa Ram Kataria, stayed on the first floor of house number 39/6 with his son Sudhir and daughter-in-law Sashi. Sudhir, who works a surveyor with an auto insurance company, had left for work around 1.30pm. A maid had come to the house around 2.30pm and left by 3pm.
Sudhir returned at 6pm but found the lights outside the house switched off. He rang the doorbell a few times and tried calling his wife, but the phone went unanswered. He then called his daughter Mansi who stays in the lane opposite theirs. Her husband Rajat had a duplicate key to the house and they reached within a few minutes and opened the door. Sewa Ram was found lying face down on the floor with his throat slit, while Sashi was on the bed.
Police were informed and a team led by DCP Parmaditya and officers from Patel Nagar police station reached the spot. Other family members were also informed about the incident. Neighbours said that Sudhir’s son Amit is a chartered accountant and stays in Australia while his daughters stay in Delhi.
Initial probe suggests that the killers had a friendly entry to the house as they had a cup of tea after which Sewa Ram was attacked. A scuffle with Sashi was also noticed by the crime team. Police have detained the maid for questioning. She has been working with the family for the past five years.
Cops said the killer might have escaped through the back door as the front door was locked from inside. CCTV footages from the area are being recovered to identify the criminals. A case of murder under Section 302 IPC has been registered.
