Three Maoists killed in ‘encounter’

Three Maoists, including two women cadres, were killed in an “exchange of fire” with a joint team of Telangana and Chhattisgarh police in the Lankapalli forest area on the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border late on Friday afternoon.

The incident occurred near Lankapalli in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh.

The “encounter” took place a few kms away from Perur in Wajedu mandal of Khammam district, sources said.

The identity of the three slain Maoists could not be established immediately.

The incident took place when rebels opened fire on a joint team of police personnel of Telangana and Chhattisgarh during a combing operation by the latter in the Lankapalli forest area late in the afternoon, said R. Bhaskaran, Additional Superintendent of Police, Bhadrachalam.

The police personnel returned fire in self-defence.

Three bodies of Maoists, clad in olive green uniform, were found at the encounter site.

Efforts are on to identify the bodies, he said, adding that five weapons were recovered from the incident site.
