CBI arrests former R&AW officer Nirvikar Singh in graft case
New Delhi: A former Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer was on Thursday arrested by CBI for allegedly taking a bribe from a businessman on promise to settle a disproportionate assets case against him.
The ex-RAW officer had cited his purported links with a SP-ranked officer in the agency, which was probing the case.
The businessman was also arrested and both were produced before a court which remanded them to two days in police custody.
Agency sources said that Nirvikar Singh, former Aide-de-camp (ADC) of Lt Governor in Chandigarh, who was also facing CBI probe in disproportionate assets case was arrested with businessman Bhupinder Singh for allegedly receiving a bribe of Rs 15 lakh on behalf of the SP-ranked officer of CBI.
The sources said that Singh had told Bhupinder that he could settle an ongoing case against him using his contacts with a Superintendent of Police in CBI and had demanded Rs 30 lakh for the same.
They said they were nabbed from posh Khan market while first installment of Rs 15 lakh of the alleged bribe was being exchanged this evening.
The sources said that the SP is under scanner but not arrested as his role is yet to be probed. They said Nirvikar Singh has allegedly developed closeness with the said CBI officer during a probe of a DA case against him.
Nirvikar Singh, who held the rank of Major in the army, had become ADC to Lt Governor in Chandigarh in 2005. He later joined RAW as Under Secretary but his tenure was cut short after CBI registered a case against him.
CBI had alleged that he had amassed assets disproportionate to his known sources of his income.
“As part of its emphasis on strict internal vigilance drive, role of the concerned officer of CBI is also being scrutinized.
“A case of Disproportionate Assets is also presently being investigated by CBI against the said ex-Army Officer who was earlier ADC to Governor of Punjab,” CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad said on Thursday.
She said that it has been alleged that the payment of Rs 15 lakh was part of Rs 30 lakhs bribe demanded by the ex-Army Officer in the name of SP-rank CBI officer in lieu of facilitating undue favour in the trial of a case of fraud pending against the businessman.
The spokesperson said that searches have been conducted at three locations in Delhi and Gurgaon, which led to recovery of incriminating documents and substantial cash.
Prasad said the arrested accused were produced today in the Designated Court at Patiala House Courts, New Delhi and were remanded to two days police custody.
