Miscreants damage glass enclosure of Mangaluru church
MANGALURU: Miscreants allegedly damaged a glass enclosure containing statues of Mother Mary and Infant Jesus at St Joseph Vaz prayer hall in Panir, near here, on Tuesday night.
“A stone was thrown at the glass casing, damaging it. We are yet to make arrests in the case. Tight security is in place now. We’ve included churches in our beats,” said R R Kalyana Shetty, assistant commissioner of police, Mangaluru South division.
The incident comes close on the heels of a string of church attacks in Delhi.
Health and family welfare minister U T Khader on Wednesday visited the prayer hall and said miscreants are resorting to such acts to create fear and insecurity among the public. Noting that a majority of the people want peace and harmony, he said such incidents will vitiate communal harmony in the region.
Deputy commissioner of police K Santosh Babu also visited the spot. A case has been registered in Konaje police station.
Bishop of Mangaluru Diocese, Aloysius Paul D’Souza, condemned the incident. Mangaluru Diocese secretary M P Noronha said police should identify and nab the culprits soon. “Cops must provide extra protection to churches and other places of worship,” he added.
The prayer hall is attached to Our Lady of Mercy Church in a remote area.
