Murder on Chennai court premises: Bar council suspends five lawyers
CHENNAI: Three weeks after a lawyer was murdered during the Egmore Bar Association election, the state Bar council on Tuesday cracked the whip and debarred five lawyers, named in the murder case, from practising in any court and tribunal.
The prohibited lawyers are — A Michael, K Rajesh, A Charles, R Natarajan and C P Naresh Kumar.
D Selvam, chairman of the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, issued a show-cause notice asking as to why the recognition of the Egmore Bar Association could not be cancelled as the incident had brought disrepute to the whole legal fraternity.
On January 30, 2015, the Egmore magistrate court premises here witnessed elections to the Bar association. Votes were counted and results were declared the same evening.
Moments after the results were out, a scuffle broke out between two factions of advocates, and lawyer K Stalin was killed in a stone attack on the court campus.
The fact that a practising lawyer was killed by members of lawyer community has shocked everyone and it lowered lawyers’ image in the eyes of public, Selvam said.
