Man held for sexually abusing niece for 6 years
PUDUCHERRY: The territorial police on Saturday arrested a 34-year-old man on charges of sexually abusing his niece for more than six years. Police produced K Muniappan alias Moses, 34, of Nonankuppam, a worker at a scrap shop in the territory, before a judicial magistrate, who remanded him in judicial custody.
Child welfare committee chairperson Vidyaa Ramkumar lodged a complaint with Ariyankuppam police two weeks ago stating that Muniappan, who has been the guardian of his niece and nephew after their parents passed away, had been molesting the girl for the last six years. The victim was five years old and her brother was three when their parents were killed in two different accidents12 years ago.
Vidyaa in the complaint said the victim, who is 17 years now, was studying in a school in Cuddalore district and her brother, who is 15 years now, was admitted to a boarding school in Puducherry. The minor girl used to visit her uncle’s family every weekend. Muniappan molested her periodically when she stayed in his house. The hapless girl could not muster enough courage to tell her other relatives about the sexual abuse.
Muniappan got married seven years ago and has two daughters, one aged six and another two. He continued to molest his niece and it got worse when the victim discontinued studies after Class 10 and stayed at his house. The victim, who was deeply affected by the trauma and repeated abuse, decided to run away from home.
She boarded a bus bound for Chennai two months ago. A former Childline activist Ruben, who also boarded the bus, spotted her. The activist inquired about her background and the victim slowly opened up and narrated to her the ordeal she had been going through. Ruben alerted Childline coordinator (Puducherry) S Ravi and activist D Elizabeth. Childline admitted her to a children’s home and extended counselling to her. Childline later referred the case to CWC.
Ariyankuppam police booked Muniappam under section 5 (n) (relative of the child through blood committing penetrative sexual assault on such child) of the protection of children from sexual harassment act (Pocso) and arrested him. He was subjected to potency tests. If convicted he would be imprisoned for a term of not less than 10 years. The victim, who was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi women and children hospital, would undergo medical examination.
