Mumbai cop’s son, five others held for beating youth to death
Mumbai, Feb 18: The 22-year-old son of a cop has been arrested, along with five of his associates, for killing a youth following an altercation at Malad East on Monday. Amol Ghuge, the prime accused, is the son of constable Suresh Ghuge who is posted at the local arms unit of Mumbai Police. The arrests were made within 24 hours of the incident which was captured entirely on closed circuit cameras. Most of the accused were caught from Nashik where they had fled after the offence.
The deceased, Afzal Beg, was a resident of Pathanwadi in Malad. Early on Monday, Beg and his friend, Shivanand Mishra, 25, were out for a ride. Beg was seated pillion. Ghuge approached on his motorcycle from the opposite direction and waylaid Mishra. An argument ensued and both groups hurled abuses at each other.
“Ghuge allegedly grabbed Beg and dragged him off Mishra’s bike. He was joined by six others who rained blows on Mishra and Beg. Mishra somehow managed to free himself, got back on his bike and fled. However, Beg was assaulted with cement paver blocks and glass tubelights. His head and face were covered with injuries. When he stopped making any movement, the accused abandoned him and fled. The incident occurred outside Swapnalok Tower in Pimpripada, Malad East,” said a police official.
Around 2.25 am, the Kurar police received a call from local residents and rushed to the spot. They moved a heavily bleeding Beg to the Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali. He succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday. The case of ‘attempt to murder’ was then converted into that of ‘murder,’
On being quizzed by the cops, Mishra disclosed the identities of some of the accused that he knew. Ghuge’s associate, Iftekhar Ansari, was the first to be nabbed from Pathanwadi itself. Ghuge and the others had fled to Nashik. A team of officers was formed and sent to Nashik, Ghuge, Siddharth Javrash, 21, Vishal Atkale, 23, Vikas Gadhve, 22 and Jaipal Suryavanshi, 24, were picked up from Ghoti in Nashik. One more accused, Avinash Ambekar, is wanted in the case.
Ghuge’s motorcycle has been seized besides the paver blocks used for committing the offence.
