Labourer arrested for killing infant daughter near Bhubaneswar

BERHAMPUR: Police on Friday arrested a daily labourer for allegedly hammering his two-and-half-month-old daughter to death and injuring his wife at Tintal village on Ganjam-Gajapati border early on Thursday. Police also seized weapons, including the hammer, used by Sarathi Bhuyan, 45, in the crime.

His wife, Brundabati, 35, who sustained head injuries, is undergoing treatment at Patrapur medical centre in Ganjam district. Police said the incident took place over a quarrel between the husband and wife. The accused married Brundabati four years ago. His first and second wives are no more. The accused has a five-month-old daughter from his third wife, who is alive, and two sons from his previous wives, police said. They were sleeping in another room of the house when the incident took place, police adedd.

Police said Shashi Mandal, sister of the accused, lodged the complaint. Police took four to five hours to reach the remote hilltop village.
