Airport agency staffer held with Rs 1.5cr gold
MUMBAI: An employee of a ground handling agency Rohan Surve, who was on duty at the international airport, was arrested by Customs officials on Wednesday for allegedly helping a flyer smuggle in gold worth Rs 1.51 crore.
The passenger, K C Chaudhari, who had arrived from Bangkok was also arrested.
Commissioner of Customs A P S Suri said Surve, was held as he was crossing the Customs gate with a motorcycle battery-like object. Officials said they found 32 gold bars worth Rs 1.25 crore hidden in the object. “Eight more gold bars worth Rs 26 lakh were found in his pocket,” said additional commissioner of Customs, Milind Lanjewar.
Surve was to hand the gold to Chaudhary outside the airport. For this, he was to be paid a commission.
In two other cases, Customs officials seized gold worth Rs 20 lakh from two passengers at the airport. A passenger from Dubai had hidden gold in his rectum while another from Colombo had hidden gold in her shoes.
