Women and Child Development Officer Shakuntala suspended
Mangaluru : Shakuntala, a former Deputy Director of the Department of Women and Child Development in DK district, who was serving Kolar district in the same position, has been suspended from service by the Department on the charges of involvement in embezzlement of funds to the tune of several crores of rupees.
According to Varalakshmi, State President of the Anganavadi Workers Association, the Association had earlier complained to Health Minister UT Khader with regard to the scam involving Shakuntala who was serving in Kolar wherein she allegedly flouted norms with regard to supply of food materials supplied to Anganavadis. The Association had staged several protests in this regard and the issue had even led to pandemonium in the Kolar ZP meeting following which separate enquiry was instituted by the Zilla Panchayat and the Women and Child Development Department. The suspension was made after the investigation report was submitted, she said.
When Shakuntala was serving Dakshina Kannada, several DYFI and CPI(M) activists had staged protest alleging her direct involvement in the supply of expired food materials from a Tamil Nadu based firm to Anganavadis.
Following the protests, Shakuntala had filed irrelevant cases against the protesting DYFI and CPI(M) activists and had also booked Karavali Ale, the sister publication of The Canara Times for publishing reports regarding the scam.
