Cases of intimidation, rape, on rise in E.G.
Cases of intimidation, rape and molestation registered recently in East Godavari points to an increasing trend of crimes against women in the district.
In Karakkayapeta of Kamanagaruvu village on the rural mandal of Amalapuram constituency in Konaseema, Guttula Satya Surya Venkata Prasad was arrested recently by police for taking photographs of a young girl. According to Amalapuram Rural Inspector Devakumar, the Prasad allegedly went to the girl’s house on Monday night and tried to molest her, but she managed to escape.
She attempted suicide the next day and was rushed to the Amalpuram area hospital. After her condition turned critical, she was shifted to the Kakinada government hospital where she recovered. However, police picked up Prasad who reportedly had political connections. He was produced before the Amalapuram Magistrate on Thursday and remanded to judicial custody. He was booked under Section 376 of the IPC, prevention of atrocities against SC/ST and a case under the IT Act for clicking pictures and threatening to host them in the social media.
Meanwhile, Tribal Welfare Department Deputy Director Manikumar on Thursday suspended D. Mahesh, a teacher at the Irlapalli tribal welfare high school in Rampachodavaram mandal. Preliminary enquiry has proved that Mahesh was guilty of sexually harassing girls. On a complaint registered by MLA Vanthala Rajeswari, police arrested Mahesh.
In 2014, total number of molestation and rape cases in Rajahmundry and sub-division put together are approximately around 15, higher than the crimes registered in the last three years.
