College boy in coma after attack by molest gang in Howrah
HOWRAH: A 20-year-old college student, who took on drunken youths for teasing girls in a Saraswati Puja procession at Howrah’s Hrishikesh Ghosh Lane, on Thursday slipped into coma after sustaining critical injuries during a brawl with his attackers.
Victim Arup Bhandari was allegedly beaten up severely when he tried to rescue his friend Abhijit Basu. Abhijit, who escaped with minor injuries, said the two of them were allegedly attacked around 11pm when they returned from the immersion ghat.
It all began earlier on Wednesday evening when Saraswati Puja organizers in the Hrishikesh Ghosh Lane locality were setting out to immerse the idol. Several residents of the area, including women and girls, had boarded the vehicle that was carrying the idol while others were walking behind. Just then, some drunken youths allegedly started making obscene gestures and teasing the girls.
An altercation broke out when Arup and Abhijit protested. Others, however, brokered peace and the immersion procession strode on.
After they returned late at night, the youths went up to Arup and Abhijit and attacked them.
Howrah City Police DC headquarters Nishat Pervez said FIRs had been registered against five youths identified by Abhijit in his complaint. “They are absconding. We have launched raids to trace them,” he said.
