Three get life term in Kurmuri rape case

ARA: Additional district and sessions judge I, Ara, J P Mishra on Wednesday awarded rigorous life imprisonment to all the three accused – Nilnidhi Singh, former area commander of the outlawed Ranvir Sena, his brother Jai Prakash Singh and their employee Jaggu Pandit in the gang-rape case of a minor girl of a Mahadalit community. In addition, the court awarded them 20-year rigorous imprisonment under Section 376 (D) of IPC and 10-year imprisonment under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. All the punishments will run concurrently.

The court had convicted all the three accused on January 22 in connection with the gang-rape of a 11-year- old Mahadalit girl but did not find any evidence of rape on other five women.

At least six women, including four teenagers, of Mahadalit community, all rag pickers, were allegedly gang-raped at village Kurmuri under Sikarhatta police station area in Bhojpur district on October 8, 2014, when they had gone there to sell scraps at the godown of Nilnidhi Singh. All women were residents of village Dumaria. Police had arrested Nilnidhi Singh, Jai Prakash Singh and Jaggu Pandey.

Vishnudhar Pandey, the defence advocate, said he would move the Patna high court against the trial court judgment.
