Relief to Dalit Father in Honour Killing Case
CHENNAI: A writ plea has been made in the Madras High Court for a direction to the government to pay the interim compensation to a Dalit father for the alleged honour killing of his 30-year-old daughter, 38-day-old grandson and his son-in-law.
When the writ petition from N Ganesan of Melapanaiyur in Tiruvarur district came up for hearing before Justice TS Sivagnanam on Tuesday, the Additional Government Pleader took notice and sought time to obtain instructions. And the judge granted time tillFebruary 6.
In his petition, Ganesan submitted that his daughter Amirthavalli had fallen in love with one Palaniappan, a Vanniar, and eloped with him. The woman gave birth to a boy onNovember 3, last year. While so, she decided to go and live with Palaniappan’s family, where all the three were done to death.
The petitioner lodged a complaint with Kottur police, who registered an FIR for offences under Sections 302 (murder) of the IPC and Sec. 3(2) (v) of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Ordinance, 2014.
The postmortem was done on December 11, 2014. However, till date the Tiruvarur District Collector had not given the interim relief amount under the Act. Hence, the present petition for a direction to the Collector to release the interim compensation of 75 per cent of the total compensation.
