PSI arrested for tampering with FIR in rape case
VADODARA: Panchmahal district police arrested a police sub-inspector (PSI) on the charge of dereliction of duty for allegedly altering an FIR filed by a tribal woman. The PSI has been sent to judicial custody.
The rape had taken place in 2011 and the woman had approached Shahera police station with a complaint. Panchmahal superintendent of police (SP) Raghavendra Vatsa said PSI A U Gadhvi tore the original FIR and altered the contents in the new FIR that he got registered.
Vatsa said a FIR against Gadhvi was registered about three months ago and he was arrested on Sunday. He proceeded on leave and had gone underground after the FIR was registered against him.
“When the matter came to light, the then SP suspended Gadhvi. However, he was reinstated at Shahera later,” said Vatsa.
Vatsa added that when he took over as Panchmahal SP, complaints against Gadhvi made to the state human rights commission and the director general of police (DGP) were pending for nine months. “These had been forwarded to Panchmahal police, but no development had taken place,” he said.
Vatsa said after investigations on the complaints, it had come to light that there was truth in them. “The complainant was reluctant to proceed further with the charges that were levelled against the PSI,” he said. The PSI had sought anticipatory bail, but was not granted the same.
