Jail warden dies after spat with inmate

LUDHIANA: A jail warden posted at Ludhiana central jail died under mysterious circumstances on Monday following a verbal spat with an inmate.

The deceased who has been identified as 52-year-old head constable Gurbhej Singh. Jail officials informed that on Monday he had an argument with a jail inmate.

However, things settled down between them and after the spat he went away and sat outside a barrack in the premises. However it was there that all of a sudden he fell on the ground and lost consciousness. All the staff employed at the jail rushed him to hospital in the jail where the doctors declared him dead.

Jail officials suspected that Gurbhej Singh has died owing to a cardiac arrest. Body of the deceased was taken to the civil hospital where a team of three doctors conducted autopsy. The viscera was later sent to laboratory for chemical examination to discover the cause of death.

Police has initiated action under Section 174 of Criminal Procedure Code treating it as natural death. However, they informed that they will wait for the viscera report and in case something new comes out, they will act accordingly.
